Privacy
Freshoku is a small, free, ad-free project. It collects the least it can while still being able to answer one question: does anyone use this? This page says exactly what that means, including the parts that are less flattering.
What Freshoku does not do
There are no accounts and no sign-in, so Freshoku never learns your name or email. Freshoku sets no cookies of its own. It shows no advertising, and it neither sells nor shares anything with advertisers or data brokers. Nothing you do here is linked to you on any other site.
The device id
To know how many people use Freshoku - not how many page loads there are - the app stores one randomly generated identifier in your browser's local storage. It is not derived from anything about you or your device: it is a random number, and it means nothing on its own.
It is used to count roughly how many distinct browsers use Freshoku each day and each month, and which features get used. It is sent only to Freshoku's own servers, never to a third party, so it cannot be used to follow you to any other website.
"Roughly" because the count is a headcount of browsers, not of people: one person on a phone and a laptop is two, and a browser that clears this storage - private-browsing windows always do, and some browsers wipe it after a week or two of not visiting - comes back as a new one. The monthly number in particular tends to run a little high for that reason.
The id lasts at most about 13 months (390 days). Nothing deletes it on a schedule: the next time you open Freshoku after that, the old one is discarded and an unrelated new one takes its place. You can also turn it off entirely, below.
What is recorded
Opening the app, opening a listing, using a filter, tapping a link out to a restaurant's own site, and using "near me" each send one short record. A record contains: which of those things happened; a short tag saying which one - for a listing, that listing's id; for a link, whether it went to a website, Instagram, an article, or a city record; the device id; a session id that lasts only as long as the browser tab; which build of the app you are on; whether you are in a browser tab or have installed Freshoku as an app; and your country.
Your country is worked out from your network address at Cloudflare's edge. The address itself is never stored by Freshoku.
Because a listing's id sits in the same record as the device id, for as long as those records are kept it would in principle be possible to see which listings one browser opened. Freshoku does not look at them that way - the only questions asked of this data are how many distinct browsers were active and how often each kind of action happened - but it is stored, so it is stated here plainly rather than described as impossible.
Records are kept for three months. After that only daily totals remain, and a total cannot be traced back to a device.
Never recorded: your name, your email, your network address, your location, or the text of anything you type.
Location
Freshoku never asks for your location on load. If you turn on "near me", your browser asks your permission first, and the coordinate is used to sort what is on screen by distance. It is never sent to Freshoku and never stored on any server - only the fact that you used the feature is counted.
The last accepted coordinate is saved in your browser for up to seven days, so the map can open on your area next time instead of panning there. Turning near-me off clears it, and so does the button below.
Instagram posts
Some listings show an Instagram post announcing the opening. Expanding one loads it directly from Meta, which means Meta receives the request and may set its own cookies. That is Meta's embed, subject to Meta's terms, not something Freshoku controls. Nothing is loaded from Instagram until a card containing one is opened.
Traffic and performance
Freshoku also uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, a cookieless service that reports page views and page-speed measurements. It sets no cookies, stores no identifier, and cannot recognise a returning visitor.
Restaurant information
The restaurant data Freshoku shows comes from public and open sources, not from users. Those sources, and the licence each one carries, are listed on the data sources and notices page.
Turn it off
This stops the counting for good on this device, not just for now: the device id is deleted, the saved location is cleared, and a note is kept so that no future visit starts counting you again. Records already collected stay until they age out, and none of them can be traced back to you. Nothing about how the app works changes.
